The Way of Pears, of Potatoes

An old poem published in a past issue of the Lanthorn, my alma mater’s literary magazine.

The Way of Pears, of Potatoes

I realized, recently, that
Ten would accomplish the mission.
Ten in hand and ten in foot,
Ten in ten will do this job.

The same way wooden ladders –
long, lanky, and thirty years old,
are right for picking pears;

Or how it’s better to go
barefoot, in a dark plaid dress,
when it’s time to turn potato patches:

Snatching some with your fingers,
finding more with your feet.
